How do you recognise loneliness among employees and what can you do about it as an employer?

It is not always easy for employees to talk openly about personal problems at work. For example, if someone is lonely, it can lead to all kinds of negative feelings, such as stress, anxiety or depression. It can be very challenging to talk about this with your employer. So, how do you deal with this as an employer, in order to prevent reduced productivity or even downtime?

Recognising the signs

As an employer or manager, what matters first of all is that you learn to recognise the signs of loneliness:

  1. Reduced motivation: an employee who feels lonely is less motivated to participate in projects or actively contribute to conversations.
  2. Reduced social interaction: loneliness can lead to isolation. This could apply both during working hours and during informal social activities, such as lunchtimes or coffee breaks.
  3. Reduced communication: if a person is usually very communicative but suddenly becomes much quieter or does not respond to messages, this may indicate loneliness.
  4. Irritable and negative: an employee who is lonely may become irritable and tired or develop a negative attitude towards work.
  5. Reduced performance: loneliness can affect concentration and productivity, which in turn may lead to poorer work performance.
  6. Physical symptoms: sometimes loneliness causes employees to have physical symptoms – such as headaches, sleep deprivation and fatigue - that can result from emotional stress.
  7. Reduced confidence: loneliness is detrimental to self-confidence. The employee may start to doubt their contribution to the team or value within the company, for example.
  8. Absenteeism: loneliness can lead to increased absenteeism or a pattern of absence without a clear physical reason.

Creating an inclusive corporate culture

A corporate culture that pays attention to the well-being of employees can improve the overall atmosphere within the organisation. By offering anonymous coaching, for example, you can create an inclusive culture where employees who are lonely or have other problems feel valued and heard. This can improve collaboration within the teams and the connection with the organisation, which in turn can prevent absenteeism and promote productivity.

The benefits of anonymous coaching

Since many people feel uncomfortable with the idea of their supervisor knowing about their personal challenges, it is crucial that the coaching is anonymous. The employee's identity is kept confidential, so employees feel more comfortable speaking openly and honestly about personal problems, work-related difficulties or emotional blockages. This can lead to deeper insights and more effective solutions. Anonymous coaching provides a space to explore new perspectives or behaviours without the fear of negative consequences in the workplace. This can make it easier to try new strategies. Even better, it promotes self-reflection so that the employee is motivated to make changes without worrying about other people's opinions. In short, anonymous coaching takes away barriers and can therefore contribute to more openness and confidence and more effective personal growth.

Cost savings

This makes anonymous coaching a good investment in reducing absenteeism. After all, it will make employees feel supported and work on their personal growth, making them less likely to feel overworked or stressed. In turn, this prevents absenteeism, with all the associated cost savings. Not to mention the costs you will save in recruiting and onboarding new employees.

Accessible tool

Asking for mental help when you feel lonely will always be difficult, which is why at One2Talk we have made the threshold as low as possible. It only takes five easy steps for employees to anonymously connect with a coach. Even afterwards, the employer will not have access to the data or information about the conversations.
